LATEST - a theory on 0-60 times

We recently observed that it is possible to create a simple 0-60 mph calculator that determines a car's theoretical 0-60 time based on a few simple criteria such as its weight and power to a reasonable degree of accuracy.  (anything from 0.1 second to 1 second in most cases).

Check out our  calculated zero to to sixty figures compare to real live 0-60 times.

Driving Games

As well as reviews of the real thing, we're going to be taking a serious look at virtual driving.  The latest video games for XBox, PC and PS2 are becoming so realistic that you'd almost think you were out on the track, allowing you to try things you wouldn't normally do (we hope).  [Like crashing you mean? Jaguar F Type dropped?

Rumours from Jaguar are that the departure of Wolfgang Reitzle will mean the end of the F-Type project.  Jag fans were looking forward to the mid engine V6 that was expected to be the rich man's Boxster.  It appears that Reitzle's enthusiasm for the new super-car was fighting against economic arguments.  With Reitzle out of the way, it looks as if the rest of the company will opt for caution and axe the development project.

Instead of the F-Type, we hear that the X-Type estate programme has been advanced and the new XJ sedan is due out soon.  Admittedly, these will sell in much greater numbers than the F-Type would have, but we think Jaguar needs its super cars to maintain its prestige image.  Otherwise Ford might as well stick blue ovals on the cars.

Porsche Boxster Revisions

Porsche have revised their Boxster range, adding more power and improved features without increasing the list prices!  Accessory prices have increased by 1% though.  Considering that there's a 12 month waiting list for the brilliant little roadster, and that the company can sell every single car they can make, we're slightly surprised by this apparent generosity.

Boxster S
Boxster & Boxster S - New Indicator Lens

The Boxster revisions are great news for anyone who's got one on order for delivery after the end of September though!  New features include an improved roof with four supports to give a better shape and to incorporate a glass rear screen.  There are are also minor bodywork changes, clear indicator lenses, re-positioned air intakes, and most importantly more power and improved fuel economy.   Wow!

Road Test Review

This month's Cars-Cars-Cars road test review features the Celica T-Sport. Although the first impression is of flats and angles, the subtle curves of the body can be seen on closer inspection.  The car is slightly wider across the front wings, then cuts in at the passenger compartment only to flare back out again towards the rear.

Toyota Celica 190 GTS

And it isn't just fast - Toyota's brilliant little performer was recently awarded top place for reliability in Top Gear's 2002 car awards.  The Celica was also voted top coupe, and took 13th place for overall satisfaction.  Given the competition at the top end of this table, this is a great result.  Toyota also took top place for the Lexus IS200, which was designed by the same team as the Celica, 5th overall for the Yaris and 12th for the MR2.  The Toyota Corolla came 20th and no other manufacturer had anywhere near this number of vehicles in the top 20.  Well done Toyota.
