TOCA Race DriverThe new incarnation of TOCA is firmly aimed at stealing the gold crown from the established GT3, and whilst it comes close overall, and in some areas excels, it's let down by slightly less sharp graphics details, and a slightly less involving drive. Testers found it extremely hard to judge exactly where to brake, change gear, and turn-in for corners, possibly because of the lack of graphic detail that we've come to rely on to help us assess the optimum parameters for a difficult corner. On the other hand, keen drivers might argue that accurately assessing these factors is the challenge of a good driving game, and that this is a feature rather than a disadvantage; novices though will certainly find that the signals are confusing, and will either brake too early, or else will find themselves flying off as they brake too late, and too hard to make the corner. The
rendering of cars on the new TOCA is variable - some appear to
be made of cereal cartons glued together and painted, whereas
others are rendered quite well. None, however, match the detail offered by GT3 on the
PlayStation 2, or Project Gotham on the Xbox.
Nice try, but not quite there. The
TOCA now has an annoying storyline that, in our opinion, just
gets in the way. OK, some people want more than a quick blast round a track
from their driving games, and if that's you then you might just
like TOCA. Fans of
pure driving games will find that this just gets in the way of
their driving pleasure. As they say, 'you can please some of the people…'.
